Today’s tip No. 33 · Agents ·

Should you let AI shopping agents buy from your store?

Decide on purpose: block, allow browsing, or allow checkout, because big retailers are now picking very different sides.

In October 2026 Walmart announced an Agent Gateway for assistants like ChatGPT and Gemini, plus Agent Profiles (launching in November) that let shoppers give an agent spending limits. Amazon has gone the other way and blocked agents including Meta's Muse. Your bot settings already make this choice for you, whether you meant to or not. Talk to your developer and your payments provider before you flip anything.

Do this

  1. Check what your CDN and checkout do with automated traffic today.
  2. Decide whether agents may browse, add to cart or buy.
  3. Write the policy down and revisit it every quarter as the platforms change.

The tip library

33 tips so far, newest first. A new one every morning.

  1. 33

    Agents

Should you let AI shopping agents buy from your store?

Decide on purpose: block, allow browsing, or allow checkout, because big retailers are now picking very different sides.

  2. 32

    Marketplaces

How do you get products into ChatGPT shopping results?

If you sell on Shopify or Etsy, your catalog is already connected. Otherwise apply at chatgpt.com/merchants to share a product feed.

  3. 31

    Measurement

How do you check whether AI crawlers visit your site?

Filter server or CDN logs by AI crawler user agents and look for blocked (403) responses.

  4. 30

    Marketplaces

Do retailer listings beyond Amazon matter?

Yes: Walmart, Target, Instacart and other retailer pages get crawled and cited, so keep them complete and consistent.

  5. 29

    Trust

    Does author expertise matter?

Yes: content from named people with real credentials is more credible than anonymous copy.

  6. 28

    Technical

Should you add an llms.txt file?

It's cheap and harmless, but treat it as optional, because no major AI company has said it uses llms.txt.

  7. 27

    Technical

    Does image alt text matter?

Yes: descriptive file names and alt text help image search and multimodal systems understand what's in the photo.

  8. 26

    Earned media

Should you publish transcripts of podcasts and videos?

Yes, because text is much easier for AI systems to read and quote than audio or video.

  9. 25

    Measurement

What do you do when an assistant gets your product wrong?

Find the source it's leaning on, fix that source and update your own pages so the right answer is easy to find.

  10. 24

    Consistency

What if your brand name is a common word?

Pair the name with your category everywhere, so models can tell 'Bloom' the drink brand from bloom the flower.

  11. 23

    Content

Does freshness matter for AI answers?

Yes for anything that changes, like price, formula, availability or 'best of 2026' lists.

  12. 22

    Content

Why use HTML tables on product pages?

Tables make specs like servings, sizes and nutrition easy for machines to pull out and compare.

  13. 21

    Trust

    How should you show certifications?

As text with the certifier's name and a link to their directory, not just a badge image.

  14. 20

    Content

What content gets you recommended for specific needs?

Pages built around real use cases, like 'snacks for type 2 diabetics' or 'sunscreen for kids with eczema,' backed by honest facts.

  15. 19

    Consistency

Should your brand be on Wikipedia or Wikidata?

Wikidata, maybe, if you have reliable sources. Wikipedia only if independent coverage exists, and never written by you.

  16. 18

    Consistency

How do you help AI understand your brand as one entity?

Use the same name, description and links everywhere, and connect them with Organization schema and sameAs.

  17. 17

    Technical

Why should you care about Bing?

Microsoft Copilot is built on Bing, so a site Bing can't crawl or index is at a disadvantage there.

  18. 16

    Marketplaces

Does Google Merchant Center affect AI shopping results?

Yes, because Google's AI Mode and Gemini shopping draw on the Shopping Graph, which your Merchant Center feed feeds.

  19. 15

    Technical

    Do AI crawlers run JavaScript?

Several major ones don't, so key product facts should be in the HTML your server sends.

  20. 14

    Technical

Can assistants read the nutrition panel in your product photos?

Don't count on it, so put ingredients, nutrition and allergens on the page as real text.

  21. 13

    Measurement

Can you see traffic from AI assistants in analytics?

Yes, partly: look for referrals from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com and copilot.microsoft.com.

  22. 12

    Measurement

How do you check whether ChatGPT recommends you?

Ask the assistants the questions your buyers ask, record who shows up and repeat it on a schedule.

  23. 11

    Earned media

How do you get into the sources AI answers cite?

Earn mentions in the roundups, reviews and trade press that already rank for your category.

  24. 10

    Reviews

Do reviews change what assistants recommend?

Yes, because detailed reviews give models the exact words they use to describe and rank products.

  25. 09

    Community

How should a brand show up on Reddit?

As a disclosed founder or brand account that answers questions and follows each subreddit's rules.

  26. 08

    Content

    Should you publish comparison pages?

Yes, if they're fair, because 'X vs Y' is how people ask assistants to choose.

  27. 07

    Structured data

Are FAQ sections still worth doing?

Yes, because a plain-HTML FAQ hands machines clean question-and-answer pairs, even though Google shows far fewer FAQ rich results now.

  28. 06

    Content

What content actually gets cited in AI answers?

Pages that answer one real question clearly, with the answer in the first sentence.

  29. 05

    Consistency

Why do your product facts need to match everywhere?

When your site says 20 servings and Target says 18, a model has to guess, and it may skip you or repeat the wrong number.

  30. 04

    Marketplaces

How do you get an Amazon listing ready for Alexa for Shopping?

Write factual titles and bullets, fill every backend attribute and answer the questions buyers ask, because Amazon's assistant reads all of it.

  31. 03

    Positioning

How should you describe a product so assistants can match it to a question?

Say the plain category, the key attributes and who it's for, in the words shoppers actually type.

  32. 02

    Structured data

What schema should a CPG product page have?

Product markup in JSON-LD with brand, GTIN, images, description and an Offer with price and availability.

  33. 01

    Technical

Are AI crawlers allowed to read your site?

Check robots.txt and your CDN bot settings, because a blocked crawler can't learn anything from your pages.

Questions founders ask

What is AEO?

Answer engine optimization. It means making your brand easy for AI assistants like ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Alexa for Shopping to find, understand and recommend when someone asks a question.

What is GEO, and is it different from AEO?

Generative engine optimization. In practice people use the two terms for the same work: getting mentioned and cited in AI-generated answers. Don't let the acronym debate slow you down.

Does SEO still matter?

Yes. Many assistants search the web before they answer, so pages that are crawlable, fast and clearly written still win. AEO adds work on top: consistent facts across retailers, reviews, feeds and third-party mentions.

How do I check if ChatGPT recommends my brand?

Ask it what your buyers would ask, like 'best protein bar for runners,' and note who gets named and which sources are cited. Do the same in Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot and Google AI Mode. Repeat monthly, because answers vary.

How long does it take to see results?

Fixes to your own pages and feeds can show up within weeks in assistants that search the live web. Changes that depend on press, reviews or model training take months. Nobody can promise a timeline.

Can I pay to be recommended by ChatGPT?

Not in the organic answers. Some platforms, like Google AI Mode, show labeled ads, and those are separate from what the assistant recommends on its own.

How often is this site updated?

Every morning around 7 AM Eastern, with recent AI shopping news and new tips. Every news item links to its source.
